Today, Rep. Scott Peters (CA-52) released the following statement after the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced its final rule to dismantle the Clean Power Plan established under the Obama Administration, which aimed to reduce greenhouse gases by creating industry-wide standards for coal-fired power plants. In its place, the Administration proposed new emission guidelines for coal-fired power plants.
“President Trump’s EPA is no environmental protection champion. Instead, the Trump Administration has gone out of its way to weaken the United States’ global leadership on climate. Dismantling the Clean Power Plan will make our air less clean, our power plants less efficient, and will subject our communities to even more pollution.
“San Diego and California are at the forefront of clean energy technology, but air pollution doesn’t abide by state boundaries. We have a responsibility to leave future generations with clean air and a healthy planet. Congress must provide a roadmap to act on climate and save our planet. That’s why I created the Climate Playbook, which offers bills we can pass right now to increase our energy independence, to raise Americans’ standard of living, to ensure that future generations have access to clean air and safe drinking water, and to develop a workforce of the future to make all this possible.
“Clearly, the Trump Administration will not make this a priority. We must,” said Rep. Peters.
Rep. Peters has rebuked the Trump Administration’s initial proposal to rescind the Clean Power Plan and the rollback of the Methane Rule last year. His Climate Playbook provides a collection of policy proposals, many of which are bipartisan, that can slow and reverse the effects of climate change.
