WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Representative Scott Peters (CA-52) released the following statement after voting in support of the Suspending Energy Imports from Russia Act, which bans Russian energy imports into the United States:

“Today, I joined a bipartisan group of lawmakers to stop Russian oil imports to the United States to further weaken Putin’s hand and demonstrate American support of Ukraine. We must continue working with our allies and partners to counter Russia’s aggression, while advancing solutions here at home to blunt the impact of rising costs at the pump and strengthen our energy security moving forward.”

In addition to halting the import of Russian oil and energy products, the Suspending Energy Imports from Russia Act would review Russia’s access to the World Trade Organization as Congress and the White House explore new ways to isolate Russia in the global financial system. It would also reauthorize and strengthen the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act so the United States can impose further sanctions on Russia for its heinous attacks on Ukrainian civilians—including children—and its violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The House separately approved $13.6 billion in emergency resources to help Ukraine withstand Russia’s unwarranted attacks. This supplemental legislation passed as part of the Fiscal Year 2022 funding package will provide $4 billion in vital humanitarian aid, such as food and health care assistance, to Ukrainian citizens and over $6 billion for military support for Ukraine forces and its neighboring countries.
