WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Scott Peters (CA-52) released the following statement after attending President Obama’s speech at Georgetown University. Because of his leadership on this issue, Peters was one of a select group of U.S. House members invited by the White House to attend.  In today’s address, President Obama put forward a series of proposals to address global climate change through a series of executive actions and calls on Congress to take action.

“The President’s speech today takes some innovative approaches to addressing climate change. The address was a scholarly way of getting at one of the bigger long-term issues facing our country.

“The President endorsed several proposals that I have already offered as legislation in the House, including the STRONG Act which improves community resiliency and takes steps to create a national vision for advance planning for disasters. For every $1 we spend on disaster preparedness, we save $4 in disaster recovery costs.

“Further, President Obama addressed the need to cut emissions of dangerous super pollutants like hydrofluorocarbons and methane. These pollutants are more damaging than CO2 and the technology to combat them already exists.

“I look forward to continuing my work in Congress to address climate change issues, and I am glad that the President has highlighted the need to take action sooner rather than later on this issue.”
