On Wednesday, Rep. Scott Peters (CA-52), New Democrat Coalition (NDC) Vice Chair, joined his colleagues, NDC Chair Derek Kilmer, and the NDC Climate Change Task Force Co-Chairs Reps. Don Beyer, Sean Casten, Elaine Luria, and Susan Wild to release principles and endorsed bills to combat climate change. The New Democrat Coalition is made up of 104 Democrats, the largest ideological caucus in the House.

“For too long, we have focused on the consequences of climate change without talking about achievable progress. Scientists say we have limited time to avoid the worst effects of climate change. These principles will help us meet the goals recommended by the international scientific community. This is another commitment to confront the climate crisis through achievable policies that will protect our planet, health, and communities for future generations,” said Rep. Scott Peters.

The NDC will work to advance climate policies that address the following principles and corresponding bills:

1. Combatting climate change requires global action and American leadership.

“The New Democrat Coalition looks forward to building on the work of many of our colleagues. Also today, Rep. Peters issued the following statement regarding the Environmental Protection Agency’s announced revocation of California’s legal ability to regulate their own tailpipe pollution standards. The 1970 Clean Air Act granted California a waiver that allowed states to set auto emission standards that were more stringent than federal government regulations. 13 other states and the District of Columbia as well as several automakers have vowed to adopt California’s standards.

“The Trump Administration continues to demonstrate reckless disregard for our environment and public health. California led the way in the absence of federal leadership and proved that, through innovation, we could protect our environment and boost our economy. President Trump and his administration have repeatedly demonstrated their disregard for science and now they’re attacking our state’s right to protect the health of our people and planet,” said Rep. Peters.

Rep. Peters has criticized the Trump Administration’s decision to roll back the Clean Power Plan and the methane rule. He created the Climate Playbook to provide action steps to address the climate crisis immediately.
