Congressman Scott Peters Celebrates Over $92M in Support for Struggling San Diego Venues
January 11, 2022
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Scott Peters (CA-52) is sharing results of his work for the people of California’s 52nd district. As the second session of the 117th Congress kicks off today, Rep. Peters is celebrating funds secured during the last session to help struggling San Diego businesses. More than $92 million were delivered to 63 San Diego organizations via the Shuttered Venues Operators Grant program, funded by the American Rescue Plan which passed the House and the President signed into law last year.
As indoor spaces closed their doors to avoid infections spread from large gatherings in 2020, thousands of venues suffered crushing losses. When President Biden signed the American Rescue Plan Act into law in March 2021, the Shuttered Venues Operators Grant program provided much-needed relief for eligible industries. Shortly thereafter, the Small Business Administration’s Office of Disaster Assistance administered the funds.
“Delivering grants for CA-52 venues and businesses when they needed it most is what I was elected to do in Congress,” said Rep. Peters. “These funds support thousands of jobs and hard work, as well as the beating heart of San Diego’s artistic and musical communities.”
According to the National Independent Venue Association, the SVOG program issued more than $2,008,189,000 in relief funds to recipients in California, with over $92,072,000 grant dollars dispersed in the 52nd congressional district.
"These dollars not only support independent venues, promoters, and festivals, but also support the entire region by helping to drive revenue to hospitality, lodging, transportation, and numerous other sectors of employment,” said Joe Rinaldi, General Manager of Music Box San Diego. “Moreover, these dollars ensured independent venues can continue to offer cultural and artistic experiences in our community through live entertainment. We look forward to working with you on future projects, but today we simply write to say thank you for helping to #saveourstages."
