San Diego veterans have a new way to share their stories, thanks to some local students.

In a joint effort with the Library of Congress, local high school students in a video production class will sit down with veterans. The students will gather video and audio recordings, photos and military documents.

Rep. Scott Peters stood alongside a group of veterans, volunteers and students on Monday to say their stories should be heard.

"This is a really unique and special way for our young people to learn about the sacrifice of these brave people,” he said.

San Diego has one of the largest veteran populations at nearly a quarter of a million.

“That's what helps veterans and service members become parts of the community … it’s when they get that warm welcome and there are people there that we can relate to and share our experiences with,” said veteran James Bond, who served in the Army for eight years.

The veterans’ firsthand accounts will go down in history with the help of students like Diorita Brito from Point Loma High School.

“Their sacrifices are immense and we can never thank them enough, so the least we can do is listen to their stories and appreciate that they’re here,” she said.

Someday, her children and grandchildren can learn from the history she helped record.
