Rep. Peters Launches Veterans History Project Aboard USS Midway Museum
SAN DIEGO, CA – Today, on the deck of the USS Midway Museum, Congressman Scott Peters (CA-52) launched the Veterans History Project in the 52nd District. At the press event, Peters was joined by veterans’ group leaders, library administrators, and educators.
“I’m proud to launch this effort today to give veterans from every generation the chance to tell their story and share their piece of American history,” Rep. Peters said. “Starting today, veterans who reside in the 52nd District can contact my San Diego office to be connected with trained volunteers at a local high-school or library who will record their experience, which will be included in the Library of Congress' archives for future generations of Americans.
Peters continued, “With 22 million veterans nationwide, this project is an outstanding way to preserve these first-hand accounts of American history. I am honored to play a role in chronicling their stories and encourage members of our community to participate.”
This nationwide effort, run in coordination with the Library of Congress, collects personal accounts of American war veterans in order to provide a way for future generations to hear and learn about some of the most significant events in American history from the very men and women who were a part of, and helped shape, them.
Veterans who want to participate will be interviewed at area high schools and libraries by volunteers and students earning community service. Current partners in the interview process include the following: Women’s Museum of California, Coronado HS, The Bishop's School, Mira Mesa HS, Mt. Carmel HS, Poway HS, UC San Diego, San Diego Mesa College, Pt. Loma Library, and the Tierrasanta Library.
The project is yet another way Rep. Peters is working to support and promote San Diego’s proud and significant veterans population. Last month, Peters, local veterans groups, and non-profit organizations together launched the Military Transition Support Project to help ease the transition of active duty servicemembers into civilian life.
