SAN DIEGO, CA – Today, Congressman Scott Peters (CA-52) released the following statement after the announcement that Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, who has been in Taliban captivity since 2009, was freed today:

“Hearing of Sgt. Bergdahl’s release is a joyous relief to all who fought to bring him back, but mostly to his family who never gave up hope,” Rep. Peters said.

“I want to thank the Administration for their continued commitment to returning Bowe home and to local veterans, including former Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher, who brought this to my attention last year. This serves as a reminder to all that America holds to the ideal that no member of our armed forces gets left behind.”

Last year, just before the 4th of July, Rep. Peters held a news conference with local veterans, including Fletcher, to keep awareness of Bergdahl’s captivity alive. On that day Peters also announced H.Res. 296, which he introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives on July 10, 2013. It recommits Congress to ensuring that all servicemembers come home as we draw down operations in Afghanistan, including POW Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl.
