Dear friend,

This week marked one year since the violent insurrection in Washington, D.C. I was in the House gallery when the first insurrectionists breached the Capitol. After hearing bangs that sounded like gunfire or teargas, I was safely evacuated. Moments later, I understood the true gravity of what was occurring: a violent, concerted effort to stop the process that would certify the results and electoral votes of the 2020 presidential election. It was an attack on the Constitution, our democratic systems, and the nation.

Many Republican leaders that day denounced the mob and called it one of the darkest days in American history. When it came time for them to support real action, however, most of them cowered to Trump. To this day, many Republicans perpetuate the false notion that the election was rigged and dismiss the credibility of the commission established to investigate the details of that day.

Our democracy requires the fearless participation and resolve of both political parties, and it saddens me to see how Republican leadership was too scared to stand up for America when we needed them most. The American people deserve answers and will not forget how their representatives responded to those moments. I remain committed to protecting the sacred cornerstones of America's democracy and will not let up until all involved are brought to justice. Read my full statement on this somber anniversary here.

Below is another update on some of the work my staff and I have done recently to serve you.

Connecting Communities to Resources During the Pandemic

On Wednesday, I visited 211 San Diego for an update on the organization's operations during the pandemic. The local nonprofit connects residents to community, health, and disaster resources 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. I met with CEO Bill York and we discussed how staff is adapting their strategic plans to COVID-19 related challenges, and the nonprofit's database of over 6,000 services and resources.

My Continued Representation of the 52nd District

Recently, my office has been receiving calls from constituents regarding the California Citizens Redistricting Commission's newest district maps. I want to assure you that no changes will be made to the boundaries of the 52nd district until 2023. Until that time, I proudly represent most of the city of San Diego, Coronado, and Poway in the House of Representatives.

If you have any questions, comments, concerns, or need assistance with a federal agency, reach out to us through our website or by calling the district office at 858-455-5550.
