Dear friend,

My work continues in the district this week and the next after a busy session in Washington, D.C. Earlier this week, I sent out an invitation for my first virtual town hall of 2023. Since my district now includes areas I have not represented in the past, I would like to discuss my legislative priorities for this session of Congress on Thursday, February 23 from 5-6 P.M. PT. You may submit any questions or comments along with your registration below.

Below is another update on the work my staff and I have done recently to serve you.

Information About Passports

Congressional offices were notified that processing times for passport services will rise due to a seasonal increase in applications. Expect processing times of 8-11 weeks for routine processing and 5-7 weeks for expedited processing. These processing times do not include mail delivery service estimates. Please plan accordingly if you make plans to travel internationally. My office has seen a rise in passport casework and can help in many situations, but is not able to process every request related to passports.

State of the Union

Both Rep. Seth Moulton (MA-6) and I brought guests to the State of the Union Address who were former Afghan translators alongside American forces in Afghanistan.

On Tuesday, I attended President Biden's State of the Union address in the House Chambers. My guest was Rahmat Mokhtar, a former interpreter, who worked alongside American forces in Afghanistan and now lives in EL Cajon. I'm very grateful that he joined my call to action for Congress to pass the Afghan Adjustment Act. You can watch our conversation with CNN's Jake Tapper here in case you missed it.

The President’s words captured the challenges we face today, and all that we have accomplished when coming together. That’s what we must continue doing: working with—not against—each other. I appreciated President Biden’s message of unity, strength, and optimism for what’s ahead in our country’s future. There is much to celebrate under President Biden’s leadership, but our work for the American people continues!

Appreciating Our Wetlands

Last Saturday, I visited the Kendall-Frost Mission Bay Marsh Reserve for the county-wide "Love Your Wetlands" day of service. This day focused on the conservation of wetlands, which are some of the most valuable ecosystems on Earth. I spoke about funding available for wetland conservation in the Inflation Reduction Act and the importance of these ecosystems in the context of climate change. Thank you to every volunteer who participated!

More Investments in Affordable Housing

On Wednesday, I met with San Diego Habitat for Humanity President & CEO, Kwofi Reed. We discussed legislation and policies the federal government can employ to increase investments in affordable housing, as well as the organization's work to ensure safe and affordable homes.
