Friend,

Our state witnessed a tragic weekend with a series of mass shootings in Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay. These horrific events are unacceptable and show why we must enact stricter gun safety laws now. My heart goes out to the grieving communities who are coming to terms with their losses. I’m saddened these attacks took place during Lunar New Year, a special time for unity and joy among our AAPI communities, and targeted victims of Asian descent.

As your elected representative, I remain firmly committed to protecting our community. I stood with my colleagues on the House floor this week for moments of silence. Together, we honored all the victims of these recent shootings.

Every American has a right to feel safe in school, a place of worship, in a supermarket, movie theater, and every other public setting. You can continue to count on me to fight for a safer country in the halls of Congress.

Below is another update on the work my staff and I have done recently to serve you.

This Week's Casework Success

Erick from San Diego reached out to my office in the beginning of January to ask for help with his Medicare claims. Erick is part of a visa waiver program and was wrongfully listed by Medicare as "not lawfully present" in the country. My staff helped him collect all the necessary documents for SSA to update his information and fix this mistake. Last week, Erick received $18,633.90 in benefits.

Hearing from San Marcos' Small Business Owners

Last Thursday, I met a group of small business owners at a roundtable at the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce. It was great to get to know these small business leaders for the first time. The City of San Marcos is a new addition to the 50th district, and I appreciated introducing myself and learning about their operations in this community.

Gathering Information on San Diego's Unhoused Population

On Thursday, four members of my San Diego staff participated in the nationwide Point in Time Count. This count collects data on the needs of people experiencing homelessness and helps our understanding of housing situations that can help increase funding and improve services. I'm glad my staff took part in this year's count and learned how San Diego's agencies collaborate to support our unhoused neighbors.

CA-50's Congressional App Challenge Winner

Last Friday, I met with this year's Congressional App Challenge winner. I learned about Jaehee Kim's inspiration behind the app he developed, 'Helping Hands.' This app connects high school students with a community of support to further each other’s academic career. I applaud Jaehee for working hard to connect his peers and help them succeed. Congratulations!
