Dear friend,
President Biden announced this week his administration's student debt relief plan. Americans with student loans can now qualify to have up to $20,000 in loans forgiven. Student debt burden is complex and prompted me to introduce the Employer Participation in Repayment Act last Congress and expand avenues of relief for students. To support those who want to pursue their academic goals, I believe we should make higher education more affordable, reform payment and assistance programs like the Pell Grant, and invest in financial literacy programs.
Below is another update on the work my staff and I have done recently to serve you.
This Week's Casework Success Story
Jan from Point Loma contacted my office earlier this month requesting assistance with obtaining military personnel records for her veteran father who served as a fighter pilot in WWII. Jan sought these records to complete a commemorative shadow box in his memory, but needed to know the medals to which her father was entitled. She submitted several requests through the Department of Defense, but received no response. After my staff submitted an inquiry on Jan's behalf to the National Personnel Records Center, she received the requested documents one week later.
"I could not get through to DoD myself so I am very grateful for the help."
- Jan from Point Loma
Congratulations to Camp Pendleton's Newest Marines!
On Wednesday, I had the honor of visiting Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton to observe the end of the recruits' Crucible ceremony. The Crucible is the 54-hour final challenge that recruits must complete to become a Marine. It was amazing to see the recruits' courage and strength to complete this strenuous rite of passage. I also got the chance to see two all-female platoons complete the Crucible for the first time in history.
Learning About Innovation on Our Waters
On Thursday, I met with staff from Ocean Power Technologies at Naval Base Point Loma. I observed demonstrations of the company's power generating buoy. This equipment is armed with an awareness system to assist with early detection and timely intervention of marine vessel activities in sensitive and congested marine traffic areas.
Supporting Americans Living with Diabetes
On Tuesday, I met with Gabrielle Brits from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. We discussed research and policies to support those who live with Type 1 Diabetes, as well as the INSULIN Act and critical provisions in the Inflation Reduction Act.
