Dear friend,
I continue engaging with people I represent around the district this week. In case you missed the important announcements this week, Americans can now buy hearing aids over the counter, without a prescription or exam. Also, you can apply for the Student Debt Relief program, which provides up to $20,000 in student debt relief for working and middle class borrowers. Below is another update on the work my staff and I have done recently to serve you.
This Week's Casework Success Story
The San Diego Opera contacted our office last Tuesday to request help with obtaining visas for two members of the production team for an upcoming performance. Although both applicants' visas were approved, the U.S. Embassy had not returned the applicants' passports with their visas. Since rehearsals for the live performance were already underway, they were concerned about having to postpone or cancel the shows. My staff contacted the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City to request an expedited return of the visas and last week, the applicants were notified to pick up their visas. We all know "the show must go on" and my office was happy to help.

California Society for Democracy in Iran
|
Last week, I met with local members of the Iranian community to hear stories about the bravery and courage being displayed by young women across Iran as they protest the government. We stand with those individuals who fight for democracy and civil liberties.

Undocumented Student Action Week
On Thursday, my staff joined a discussion marking Undocumented Student Action Week at Southwestern College. Several students shared their personal stories about what the DACA program means to them and the urgent need for immigration reform. I admire these young people as Americans, hardworking students, and active members of our community. Democrats and Republicans agree that our immigration system is broken. It's time to fix our immigration laws and grant permanent status to people who have known no other home but the United States.
Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla

On Tuesday, my staff and I visited the new Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla. We enjoyed a guided tour of the exhibits by CEO Kathryn Kanjo and learned about the history of the museum as well as its expansion. I've supported San Diego's art and culture since I served on the city council, so this was a great experience on a beautiful sunny day!
