Today, U.S. Congressman Scott Peters (CA-52) issued the following statement after voting to terminate President Trump’s national emergency declaration:

“After failing to convince Congress and the American people to pay for his archaic, multi-billion dollar wall that won’t make us safer, President Trump is circumventing congressional authority and risking national security. His rash declaration could undermine dozens of real national security programs across the nation.

“If the declaration is upheld, the president could divert funding from military construction projects in the San Diego area like the Navy SEAL’s Coastal Campus in Coronado, aircraft hangar improvements at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, and modernization of Pier 8 in Downtown San Diego. It would jeopardize military readiness and strength. It also violates Congress’s exclusive power of the purse in an affront to the Constitution.

“Earlier this month, Congress overwhelmingly passed a bipartisan spending bill that invested in real border security—and the president signed it. Now that the president wants to disregard this process, we must serve as a check on his authority. I urge my Senate colleagues to put country first and honor their oath to uphold the Constitution by supporting today’s resolution.”
