WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Rep. Scott Peters (CA-52) supported the House passage of ten bipartisan bills to help American veterans and enhance the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). As the representative of a district with one of the largest veteran populations in the country, Rep. Peters has authored, fought for, and passed several bills to provide critical benefits for veterans that have been signed into law. This includes his Veteran PEERS Act, Veteran HOUSE Act, and a bill he introduced to ensure all Purple Heart veterans can access their full GI Bill education benefits.

"Taking steps that ensure our veterans get the help they need to succeed after they leave service is crucial,” said Rep. Peters. “The bills we passed today provide the VA greater ability and accountability to support our nation’s veterans.”

The legislation passed included:

  • H.R. 2788, the VA Equal Employment Opportunity Counselor Modernization Act, which would allow the VA to hire more Equal Employment Opportunity counselors to help address allegations of discrimination within the department and provide dispute resolution services.
  • H.R. 2911, the VA Transparency and Trust Act, which would require the VA to provide detailed reports to Congress on how the department uses the emergency relief funding it received during the pandemic.
  • H.R. 240, the Homeless Veterans with Children Reintegration Act, which would direct the U.S. Department of Labor to prioritize homeless veterans with dependent children for an employment-focused competitive grant program known as the Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program.
  • H.R. 2167, the GI Bill National Emergency Extended Deadline Act, which would permit the VA to pause the 10 or 15-year GI Bill benefit time limit during times of national emergency or crisis and restart the clock after it is safe for veterans to return to school, as well as invest in the modernization of the VA’s education claims process.
  • H.R. 2494, the Veterans Education, Transition and Opportunity Prioritization Plan (VET OPP) Act, which would establish a fourth administration at the VA to specifically manage veterans’ education and economic opportunity benefits programs.

All ten bills the House approved today are headed to the Senate.
