Rep. Scott Peters condemned President Trump’s executive order on Tuesday rolling back the Obama-era clean Clean Power Plan, saying it was shortsighted and unlikely to bring back fossil fuel jobs.
“President Trump’s executive order takes America’s energy economy backwards at a time when we should be seizing the opportunity that clean energy represents,” said Peters, who was an environmental lawyer before entering politics. “President Trump is mistaken in believing that he can bring back the energy sector jobs that have been lost as the market moves towards a clean energy economy.”
The Clean Power Plan called for reducing carbon pollution from America’s power plants by a third by the year 2030. The plan was opposed by the coal-mining industry, which was concerned about losing market share to cleaner natural gas and renewable energy technologies.
“Rolling back the Clean Power Plan will only rob us of the renewable energy jobs of the future and the prospect of cleaner air, cleaner water, and an economy that is more competitive in the global marketplace,” said Peters.
The federal action may not have much affect on San Diego, where San Diego Gas & Electric already produces more than a third of its power from clean, renewable sources.
Peters represents the 52nd District, which covers much of central San Diego County including Poway, Coronado, and large portions of the City of San Diego. He is a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
