Thoughts and Prayers...

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families affected by last month's fires and our graditude continues to be woth our first responders. Their tireless efforts ensured containment of the fires and allowed many residents of my district to return to their homes promptly.

I also thank residents for cooperating with our public safety officers and first responders. This is the best way for the public to reduce risks for themselves and our firefighters. With personnel from local, county, state, and military agencies all coming together to fight these blazes, coordination was crucial to safeguarding the homes and lives of San Diego residents.

Over the last two years the federal government spent more than $136 billion on relief for weather related incidents (like wildfires). My bill, the 'Strengthening the Resiliency of our Nation on the Ground (STRONG) Act,' will make communities more resilient to disasters through the creation of an information clearinghouse for state and local use, saving taxpayer money and lives.

In additon to creating an information center for state and local governments, the STRONG Act also achieves long-term savings through other factors: it establishes a Federal interagency working group to maximize government efficiency in its support of state, local, and private sector resiliency efforts; ensures that all levels of government communicate weather information effectively; and creates a unified strategic vision for resiliency efforts across the Federal government.
