SAN DIEGO, CA – Today, Congressman Scott Peters (CA-52) hosted an ‘Export Sales Seminar for San Diego Companies’ event at the San Diego ‘B’ St. Terminal. The event, conducted in conjunction with the Port of San Diego, the San Diego & Imperial District Export Council, and the U.S. Department of Commerce, featured four panels and more than fifteen speakers to provide local businesses with information on growing their export potential.
“Many businesses don’t know where to begin or find resources on how to export their products to our global trading partners,” said Congressman Peters. “I’m glad to join with local, regional, and national export agencies to show San Diego companies how they can expand their reach and create more jobs here in the future. As we work to grow our regional economy in an increasingly global market, the ability to easily export goods will only become more important.”
“Businesses with access to global markets can reap great rewards, but too many of our local business leaders don't know how to take the first step toward exporting," said Port of San Diego Chairman Bob Nelson. "That's why the Port of San Diego is reaching out to local businesses about opportunities to move overseas cargo efficiently and cost effectively. We value the support of Congressman Scott Peters and the San Diego & Imperial District Export Council in providing resources for our business community - and, by extension, helping our region compete globally.”
“The San Diego & Imperial District Export Council believes that continued growth in the export of goods and services is critically important to the long-term health and viability of our regional economy, and that one of the best ways to promote and support the growth of exports from our region is to make small and medium sized businesses aware of the export-related opportunities and resources available to them through programs such as this one,” said Bo Reed Chair of The San Diego & Imperial District Export Council. “Accordingly, we are very thankful that Congressman Peters recognizes the importance of policies and programs that help to promote exports from our region, and for his leadership with sponsoring and organizing this important event.”
Rep. Peters has been a consistent advocate for expanding local export capabilities as a way to grow the local economy and create jobs. Working with the other members of San Diego’s Congressional delegation he helped bring $226 million to the unfinished San Ysidro Port of Entry project, which will expand the number of lanes available for use, reduce wait times, and expand economic output. He has also been a vocal supporter of the Export-Import Bank, which assists businesses in exporting U.S. goods and services to international markets.
