Rep. Peters’ Statement on Equal Pay Day
April 8, 2014
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Scott Peters (CA-52) released the following statement regarding ‘Equal Pay Day,’ the date when women’s wages catch up to what men were paid in the previous year. Nationwide, according to the American Association of University Women, women earn only 77 cents for every dollar earned by their male counterparts, and in the 52nd District women earn just 75 cents for every dollar earned by men.
“I have women on my staff, I’m a husband, and the father to a young woman. Women should earn equal pay for equal work,” Rep. Peters said. “This is an issue that is important for families across San Diego given how many households rely on women’s wages to pay bills, educate their children, and save for retirement. As a supporter of the Paycheck Fairness Act, which would end this unacceptable wage gap, I will continue working to expand economic and educational opportunities for women and girls. Our country cannot be successful if women are not getting the equal pay they deserve.”
