Jeremy Meyer - It’s that time of year when football, regional foods and whatnot combine in silly wagers among politicians.

Up now is Rep. Ed Perlmutter, D-Colo., and Rep. Scott Peters, D-Calif., betting over Sunday’s AFC playoff game involving the San Diego Chargers and Denver Broncos. And the wager is, of course, the finest staple from both regions — sweet, sweet beer.

Perlmutter and Peters are members of the U.S. House of Representatives’ Small Brewers Caucus, which raises awareness on issues important to small breweries nationwide. As a side note, we here at First Drafts are also honorary members, offering support to those breweries through our wallets.

Peters is wagering cases of ‘Electrostatic’ and ‘Double Strike IPA’ from Lightning Brewery in Poway, Calif., on the Chargers.

Perlmutter’s wager includes a mixed case with ‘Pigskin Porter’ from Ironworks Brewery in Lakewood, ‘Sic ‘Em! IPA’ from Odyssey Beerworks in Arvada and ‘Colorado Native’ from AC Golden Brewery in Golden.

“In Colorado, craft beer is as important as water to economic and job growth in our communities,” said Perlmutter in a press release. “As a Colorado Native, I’m confident the Broncos are going to Sic ‘Em when the Pigskin crosses the goal line.”

In retort, Peters says, “I am proud to support the small breweries that are helping to power the economic recovery and job growth not just in San Diego, but in cities and towns across America. After the Bolts bring the Lightning to Denver this weekend, I look forward to tasting some of Colorado’s best craft beer.”

To that, we say, “Let us know what that Lighting in a bottle tastes like, Ed.”

The press release sent about the wager included a list of the breweries in each of the congressmen districts. We have to say, there are plenty of good choices in both and now we are thirsty.
