Congressman Peters Votes to Prevent Fraud, Support Veterans

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Scott Peters (CA-52) released the following statement after voting against H.R. 982, the ‘Furthering Asbestos Claim Transparency Act.’ The legislation would create new barriers and delays for those with asbestos-related illnesses, including mesothelioma, by mandating the public disclosure of claimant’s personal information. Reports from the GAO have shown no evidence of overt fraud; instead nearly all trusts have their own anti-fraud detection mechanisms and state courts are equipped to handle any allegations according to state laws.

“Shipworkers and veterans should not face a delay in getting the help they are entitled to. This legislation would have unduly hurt those suffering from mesothelioma, and other asbestos related illnesses, 30% of whom are veterans. Further, I supported a measure that would have added anti-fraud protections while maintaining ease of access for those with legitimate claims.”
