WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Scott Peters (CA-52) introduced legislation to posthumously confer a Congressional Gold Medal on Dr. Sally K. Ride for her service as the first American woman in space, as an educator, and as a pioneer for women in the fields of science, math, and physics. The Congressional Gold Medal is the highest civilian award given by the United States Congress.

“I am proud to honor the ground-breaking career of Dr. Sally K. Ride, who became the first American woman in space 30 years ago today, by introducing this measure to award her with the Congressional Gold Medal. Beyond her career as an astronaut, Dr. Ride proved a role-model for women and girls across the country.

“Despite being most famous for her time as a NASA Astronaut, Dr. Ride was also a lifelong educator, public servant, research scientist, children’s book author, and advocate for women in science. As our nation works to maintain our global competitiveness through educating the next generation in science and technology, Dr. Ride’s commitment to furthering the place of women in those fields is a laudable legacy.

“As an educator at the University of California, San Diego, Dr. Ride brought her experience and technical expertise to the classroom where she helped educate a generation of scientists and researchers. In conjunction with the Scripps Institute of Oceanography naming a research vessel in Dr. Ride’s honor, I am proud to honor her legacy by introducing this legislation.”
