Peters calls for Republicans and Democrats to work together to improve the lives of all Americans.

Washington, DC – Today, Representative Scott Peters (CA-50) released the following statement upon taking the oath of office for the 119th Congress:

“I am grateful to the people of San Diego County for once again putting their faith in me; their well-being, safety, and prosperity will continue to be my biggest priority. In the following year, I will continue to fight for San Diego — working with Republicans when I can to help our community and serving as a check when I must. I may not agree with much of what the Trump Administration plans to do, but I will make sure to advocate for the same things I always have — lower prices for goods and housing, fewer homeless neighbors, a cleaner environment, more clean energy, fiscal responsibility, and national security.

“Within the next few months, this Congress will be tested by the impending government funding and debt ceiling cliffs. This can be another partisan food fight that kicks the can further down the road, or we can use this opportunity to pass a responsible budget that invests in our communities and tackles the exploding national debt that threatens to bankrupt future generations. Unsustainable interest payments on our debt prevent us from making critical investments to make childcare more affordable, advance our renewable energy transition, and expand healthcare accessibility. Adding to our deficit in a hot economy fuels inflation and makes it tougher for Americans to start their own business, finance their first home, or buy the school supplies or sports equipment their kids need. It is a tax on every American, and the longer we wait, the more costly inaction becomes. There is no one-sided solution — we need a facts-driven conversation that looks at both revenues and spending to get this crisis under control.”
