Congressman Peters Announces 1.5% Cost-of-Living Increase for Veterans

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Scott Peters (CA-52) released the following statement after the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced there would be a 1.5 percent cost-of-living increase for veterans, families, and survivors receiving disability compensation and pension benefits through the VA. Peters is also a cosponsor of two pieces of legislation that support the same action taken by the VA today.

“I am glad to hear that the VA is taking action to make sure our nation’s veterans, their families, and survivors get a much deserved increase in their compensation as the cost of living also rises,” Congressman Peters said. “As the price of household goods increases, we need to make sure we honor our commitment to those who have served and protected this country. This increase will make a tangible impact for the large population of veterans living in the San Diego community.”

In addition to supporting the VA’s move today, Congressman Peters is a cosponsor of H.R. 569, which would make cost-of-living adjustments (COLA) for 2013 for veterans, and H.R. 570 which would make COLAs automatic and permanent while continuing to tie them to the same growth percentage as Social Security benefits. H.R. 570 passed the House in May on a unanimous voice vote.
