Peters Opposes $70 Billion In Reckless Immigration Enforcement Funding

June 9, 2026

Washington, D.C. — Today, Representative Scott Peters (CA-50) released the following statement after the House passed the "Secure America Act" to provide an additional $70 billion to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP)—on top of the $170 billion already allocated to them through last year's so-called "One Big Beautiful Bill.”

“The fact that Republicans want to write another check to ICE and CBP, who already have $150 billion in unspent funds from the so-called "One Big Beautiful Bill,” tells you everything you need to know about where their priorities lie. That money could help lower costs for hardworking Americans. Instead, it's going to agencies with a track record of abuse.

“For what? ICE agents still aren't held to the basic standards of conduct that every local police officer in this country must meet. They operate without accountability, wear masks, use military-grade equipment, and rip families apart. The results of their poor training and non-existent standards have left families in San Diego, and across the country, living in fear. I introduced an amendment to implement the commonsense reforms from my Stop Excessive Force in Immigration Act, but Republicans refused to even hold a vote on it. It's clear they have no interest in reform.

"The American people aren't asking for bigger, more aggressive immigration agencies. They want Congress to help them afford groceries, gas, and healthcare. This is a disappointing waste of time. They will not get my vote for a single additional dollar."
