June 7, 2021
Dear friend,
As we recognize the month of June as Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month, my office continues serving the people I represent by holding informational seminars that can improve their lives.
Alzheimer's is the third-leading cause of death in San Diego County. According to estimates, over 84,000 San Diegans are currently living with either Alzheimer's or another dementia. My work in Congress to increase federal investments in the National Institutes of Health, including funds for Alzheimer's and brain research, is critical to understand this disease and ultimately find a cure.
In observance of this month, we will be hosting a virtual seminar this Thursday featuring the following experts:
-
James Brewer, M.D., Ph.D., Chair, Department of Neurosciences, Professor, Departments of Neurosciences and Radiology, Director, Shiley-Marcos Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, Director, Alzheimer's Disease Cooperative Study Imaging Core at University of California, San Diego
-
Jerold Chun, M.D., Ph.D., Senior Vice President, Neuroscience Drug Discovery and Center for Genetic Disorders and Aging Research at Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute
-
Ana González Seda, MPH, Director of Programs, Alzheimer's Association San Diego/Imperial Chapter
CBS 8's Marcella Lee, who has a personal family connection to this disease, will also be joining to help moderate this discussion.
My hope is that families affected by this disease can learn more about the work of our local research community, and how to access resources their family might need to help manage Alzheimer's and its effects.
