Dear friend,

I deeply value my time in the district after a busy week in Washington, D.C. last week. In addition to the work outlined in my last newsletter, I also introduced the Targeting and Offsetting Existing Illegal Contaminants (TOXIC) Act. This bill raises penalties for those who use dangerous pesticides smuggled across the border on illegal cannabis growing sites in the U.S. Keep scrolling to watch an ABC 10 News report and learn how my bill would help fix this problem.

If you are expecting relief from the White House's student loan forgiveness program, you can visit the Department of Education's FAQ page to prepare and know what to expect as the application window approaches. Be aware of scams if you are contacted by a company saying they will help you get loan discharge, forgiveness, cancellation, or debt relief for a fee. Learn more about scams here

Below is another update on the work my staff and I have done recently to serve you.

This Week's Casework Success Story

Molly from San Diego contacted my office last month after she was approved for Social Security benefits in August. She was concerned about the delay in receiving her payments. After we contacted Social Security representatives, Molly was awarded $37,851 in backpay and additional $1,269.

How Policies Enacted by Congressional Democrats and
President Biden Benefit CA-52 Residents

In the 117th Congress, Congressional Democrats and President Biden have enacted the American Rescue Plan, Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, Inflation Reduction Act, CHIPS and Science Act and student loan relief—that will lower costs for residents in CA-52, support businesses and promote economic growth.

Did you know as of August 2022, 34,400 jobs have been created in CA-52 since President Biden came into office and 1,628,300 jobs have been created statewide?

Media Coverage of Recently Introduced Bills

KPBS News recently aired a report on a bill I introduced last month, the Developing and Nationalizing Key Cannabis Act. In this report, you can learn how my legislation would have a ripple effect on cannabis businesses, researchers, and consumers who know little about the marijuana products they buy.

My introduction of the TOXIC Act also prompted a follow up story by ABC 10 News this week. The outlet previously covered this issue in a September 2021 report and their new story provides details on my bill.

Honoring Walter Munk

Last week, I spoke on the House floor to recognize Walter Munk. He was a highly accomplished scientist and oceanographer who worked for decades in San Diego. His work helped prepare troops in Normandy during WWII, and he developed methods now used in modern tsunami warning networks. Munk also pushed to build the UC San Diego campus in the 1960s. Later in life, Munk advocated for action on climate change around the world. In his honor, I proclaimed October 19th Walter Munk World Oceans Day in CA-52.
