WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Scott Peters (CA-52) released the following statement regarding Thursday’s House passage of a resolution condemning all forms of anti-Asian sentiment related to COVID-19:

“President Trump and other national leaders have fanned the flames of hate during this pandemic, using terminology like the ‘Chinese Virus’ and ‘Kung-flu’ to scapegoat those of Asian descent,” said Rep. Peters. “These weaponized statements have perpetuated anti-Asian stigma and have increased tragic moments of ugliness, intolerance and bigotry across the country. Asian Americans contribute to our communities every day, many serving on the frontline as health care heroes and essential workers, and they have a right to feel and be safe. Yesterday’s vote reaffirms that we must confront discrimination when we see it.”

The resolution was introduced in response to over 2,600 reported anti-Asian hate crimes and incidents in recent months driven by misperceptions about the coronavirus and how it spreads.
