Rep. Peters’ Statement on Hobby Lobby Decision

SAN DIEGO, CA – Today, Congressman Scott Peters (CA-52) released the following statement after the Supreme Court rendered its 5-4 decision in the Hobby Lobby case that closely-held corporations can deny insurance coverage for employee’s birth control, as was required by the Affordable Care Act, on the basis of the employer’s personal religious beliefs:

“As a husband, father, and longtime advocate for women’s rights, I am extremely disappointed by today’s Supreme Court ruling. It seems pretty clear to me that women and their doctors, not bosses, should be in charge of personal health care decisions. The fight for birth control is about much more than family planning – it’s about the right of women to access affordable, safe preventative care wherever they live or work. It is astonishing to me that in 2014 we are still having this debate.”

Earlier this year, Rep. Peters spoke on the floor of the House of Representatives about the Hobby Lobby case (video HERE). In addition he spoke on the steps of the Supreme Court as part of a rally with advocates and supporters, including many from San Diego, of the effort to maintain access to birth control for women. He also joined a press conference with colleagues from the Pro-Choice Caucus to highlight his continued fight for women’s reproductive rights.
