Today, Rep. Scott Peters (CA-52) released the following statement after the Supreme Court of the United States ended constitutional protections for abortion in its overturning of Roe v. Wade:
“With today’s decision, the highest court in the land voted to transform American life and take away Americans’ ability to make their own health care decisions. Bans on abortions are expected in 26 states now that Roe has been struck down, denying 36 million women of reproductive age access to care.
“Today, millions of American women have fewer rights than the generations that came before them. My heart breaks for every single person who will suffer the consequences of this decision that reverses decades of progress. We braced ourselves knowing this day would come. Now that this day is here, we cannot despair. We cannot give up. The votes of six justices will pale in comparison to the votes of millions of Americans who can assert their civic and constitutional rights. If we want change, we the people must not relent in having our voices heard and our will protected.
“Now the only way to undue this tragic harm is to speak up, organize, and vote.”
