Rep. Scott Peters (D-San Diego) called on leaders in Washington to take action to stop student loan interest rates from doubling on July 1.

Peters, who represents the 52nd District including Carmel Valley, Coronado, La Jolla, Kearny Mesa and Sorrento Mesa, supported H.R. 1595, the Student Loan Relief Act, from the house floor Thursday. The proposed act by Rep. Joe Courtney (D-CT) would freeze Strafford student loan rates at 3.4 percent for two years.

Peters, who has UC San Diego, University of San Diego and Point Loma Nazarene in his district, said no student who has worked hard and qualified for college should be denied the opportunity to attend college because they cannot afford to pay for it up front.

“There are only 10 legislative days left for Congress to act to keep the dream of college in reach for millions of students. Higher education that is both high-quality and affordable is central to the success of middle class families and the American Dream,” he said in a statement.

He added that he would continue to call on Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and leaders in the Senate to take action immediately.
