UT - San Diego mayor sets stakes, table for Chargers-Broncos
January 8, 2014
Matt Hall - After scoring Cincinnati chili, BBQ and ice cream, Todd Gloria hasn't lost his appetite — for chili.
Good thing. Because if (ahem, when) the Chargers beat the Broncos on Sunday, that's what Gloria will be feasting on.
San Diego's interim mayor announced his friendly wager with Denver Mayor Michael Hancock Wednesday morning; Hancock is putting up Denver's best green chili (and then shutting up, hopefully) and Gloria is wagering some of San Diego's best Mexican food: California burritos from Ortiz's Taco Shop in Point Loma, carne asada fries from Lolita's Taco Shop in Kearny Mesa and deep-fried catfish tacos from Mama Testa Taqueria in Hillcrest.
[Editor's note: BRB. I just got hungry.]
Meanwhile, Rep. Scott Peters, D-San Diego, has announced a craft-beer bet with Colorado counterpart and fellow member of the Small Brewers Caucus, Rep. Earl Perlmutter.
[Editor's note: BRB. I'm thirsty now.]
Mayor Gloria also announced that the dome of the the city's new central library will be lit up in blue and gold lights, meaning mission accomplished for San Diego's Vince Vasquez.
[Editor's note: Well done, Vince.]
Props to Mayor Gloria and his staff for asking San Diego what he should bet and then further asking where to find the best carne asada fries in town.
Also, to avoid jinxes and because it's good sportsmanship, we offer our kudos to Mayor Michael Hancock for also asking his residents what he should bet.
We hope Mayor Gloria takes the same inclusive approach next week when he'll have to (fingers crossed) bet either the mayor of Indianapolis or Boston.
One final note: Knowing a thing or two about New England, I humbly suggest, Mr. Mayor, that if the Bolts and Pats prevail this weekend, you hold out for some world-famous New England clam chowdah.
