Lawmakers Introduce Resolution to Protect Public Service Loan Forgiveness

A group of U.S. Representatives and Senators introduced a bicameral resolution on April 14, 2026, to safeguard the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. The measure seeks to prevent the Trump administration from implementing new restrictions on eligibility for the federal debt relief initiative.
Representatives Scott Peters, Joe Courtney, and Alma Adams joined Senators Tim Kaine, Corey Booker, and Kirsten Gillibrand in sponsoring the legislation. The move follows concerns that recent administrative changes could destabilize the financial future of workers in the education and healthcare sectors.
The lawmakers emphasized that the program was designed to support individuals in critical public roles. According to the sponsors, protecting the existing framework is essential to maintaining the original intent of the law and ensuring a steady pipeline of public service professionals.
Representative Scott Peters, who represents California's 50th Congressional District, highlighted the necessity of the program for long-term career stability. Peters currently holds a net worth estimated at $60.3 million and ranks 25th in Congress for total wealth according to Quiver Quantitative.
Financial disclosures filed on January 30, 2026, show that Peters raised $157.9K in the fourth quarter of 2025. Individual donors contributed 29.0% of that total, while his campaign reported $2.5 million in cash on hand at the end of the filing period.
Beyond student loan protections, Peters has recently proposed several legislative measures. These include H.R.7845, known as the DROUGHT Act of 2026, and H.R.7118, the Genomic Answers for Children’s Health Act of 2026.
