Today, Rep. Scott Peters (CA-52) issued the following statement after he voted for the emergency border funding bill:

“Earlier this week, I voted for the emergency border funds because it helped migrants–families and young children–who have been subjected to inhumane treatment and conditions, which require our immediate attention. This bipartisan bill passed the Senate overwhelmingly with 84 votes, and Leader McConnell indicated he would not take any of our changes. This was disappointing, and while this bill is not perfect, it’s the fastest way to get them the care they need. No bipartisan agreement is perfect and this certainly is not a solution to the border crisis. President Trump needs to sign this bill so children and their families are treated with the common humanity we all deserve. Then, we need to come together to discuss long-term solutions so we can stop operating from crisis to crisis.

“But the Administration does not just get a pass. Many of us have seen the heartbreaking picture of the father and daughter who drowned while trying to reach the United States. They died at the hands of President Trump’s failed and cruel immigration policies. We must continue to pressure the Trump Administration to use these resources to guarantee the safety of children and their families legally seeking asylum.”
