WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Congressman Scott Peters (CA-52) urged fiscal responsibility and bipartisanship during the first day of the Energy and Commerce Committee’s ‘markup’ meeting to make changes to the Republican healthcare repeal bill. Rep. Peters opposes the repeal plan that would reduce insurance coverage and increase healthcare costs for working families. Rep. Peters has a track record of supporting bipartisan healthcare proposals, and urged his colleagues to work together on a fiscally responsible plan that preserves the parts of the Affordable Care Act that are working, and fixes the parts that are not.

The uninsured rate in San Diego County dropped from 17% to 10% between 2013 and 2015, when the coverage provisions of the Affordable Care Act were implemented. The rate in Rep. Peters’ district dropped from 9.4% to just 5.4%. More than 250,000 San Diego County residents are enrolled in Medi-Cal because of the Medicaid expansion passed as part of the Affordable Care Act.
