Rep. Scott Peters on Monday called for “a full, bipartisan Congressional investigation” into reports that the CIA found Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election
“I support a full, bipartisan congressional investigation into Russian interference in our election not to undermine or overturn the results, but to ensure that decision makers at every level and the American people understand the full extent of what happened,” said Peters in a statement.
The Democrat from La Jolla said a full investigation would “preserve confidence in our democratic process” and strengthen cybersecurity defenses.
“Every American should be alarmed by reports of a foreign assault on our free elections and want to get to the bottom of it,” he added.
According to a report in the Washington Post, the CIA concluded that Russian hacking was intended to help Republican Donald Trump defeat Democrat Hillary Clinton.
Peters represents the 52nd District, which covers much of central San Diego County including Poway, Coronado, and large portions of the City of San Diego.
