BROOKE RUTH - Saying that Congress had failed to take steps to curb gun violence, President Barack Obama announced on Tuesday that he would take executive actions to strengthen gun control in the nation. The actions include requiring background checks for guns purchased online and at gun shows, overhauling the current background check system, increasing mental health care spending and increasing research on gun safety technology.

Some praised Obama for his bold stance (mostly Democrats); others said he was threatening the right to bear arms (mostly Republicans).

I’d much prefer Congressional action, but if @SpeakerRyan can't summon courage to call a vote, the President is left with no choice.

This does not let Congress off the hook & I'll continue to remind @SpeakerRyan of human cost of inaction until he allows vote on gun safety.
