Rep. Peters’ Statement on Supreme Court’s McCutcheon Decision
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Scott Peters (CA-52) released the following statement after the Supreme Court delivered its 5-4 ruling in the McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission case. This ruling struck down aggregate contribution limits on how much money a donor could give to federal candidates and political party committees.
“This ruling takes us in the wrong direction and will only bring more big money into politics, disenfranchising voters across the country,” Rep. Peters said. “That the Supreme Court is continuing to treat money as equivalent to speech is disappointing, and only leads us further down the road toward unlimited spending by corporations and wealthy individuals. As an advocate for campaign finance reform, including supporting legislation to undo the disastrous Citizens United ruling, I’ll continue working on a bipartisan level to get big money out of politics.”
