Rep. Peters’ Statement on Housing Vouchers for Homeless Veterans

SAN DIEGO, CA – Today, Congressman Scott Peters (CA-52) released the following statement in support of the Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) announcement that more Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) vouchers would be available for chronically homeless veterans:

“While there has been marked progress to reducing the number of homeless veterans on our streets, we must do more,” Rep. Peters said. “I’m glad that more VASH vouchers are coming to San Diego given our large population of homeless veterans, who have sacrificed greatly to serve and protect us. I will continue to advocate for the housing and clinical services necessary through federal agencies, and local approaches like the 25 cities initiative that are necessary for this vulnerable population to begin to move forward.”

VASH vouchers are available to veterans who are eligible for VA health care coverage, who were honorably discharged, and who have demonstrated need for case management services. The program combines rental assistance programs in the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) with case management and clinical services provided by the VA.

Early last year, Congressman Peters introduced H.R. 1714, the “Shelter Our Servicemembers Act,” to start a pilot program with non-transitional housing and wraparound services for elderly homeless veterans.
