Press Releases

Today, Rep. Scott Peters (CA-52) and Rep. Colin Allred (TX-32) led an effort urging U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to act on the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

“Trade, especially trade with Mexico and Canada, is a vital driver of San Diego’s economy. I appreciate the work of my colleagues in continuing to push for the strongest U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement possible. Swiftly finalizing an agreement with improved, enforceable labor and environmental standards is critical to our community and the businesses that call San Diego home. I thank Rep. Allred for his advocacy, and join him and others in calling on Congress to persist in their negotiations,” said Rep. Peters.

“Texas is the number one trade state in the country, and trade with Mexico and Canada is critical to helping businesses big and small succeed,” said Rep. Allred. “Texas businesses depend on trade for their supply chains. I urge Congressional leadership to move forward in a productive way on USMCA because I continue to be optimistic that an agreement that benefits North Texas and our three nations can advance. I thank Congressman Peters for his leadership on this important issue and I am committed to working with my colleagues in both parties to help our businesses grow and create good-paying jobs.”

The letter was signed by 14 members total including Reps. Kendra Horn (OK-05), Haley Stevens (MI-11), Anthony Brindisi (NY-22), Joe Cunningham (SC-01), Lizzie Fletcher (TX-07), Ben McAdams (UT-04), Josh Harder (CA-10), J. The Honorable Nancy Pelosi
Speaker
U.S. House of Representatives
Washington, D.C. 20515

Dear Speaker Pelosi,

Thank you for your leadership and hard work alongside the Democratic working group seeking to resolve the outstanding issues that must be addressed to secure congressional approval of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

While addressing these concerns is not easy, the ongoing talks with the Administration have been frank and productive. We are optimistic that the remaining gaps can be bridged if all parties engage with good faith and pragmatism. We are proud that our caucus has shown a commitment to this approach.

We write in support of continued negotiations through the upcoming recess, to ensure a vote on a bipartisan agreement by the end of this year. It is imperative that we reach a negotiated agreement early in the fall. Canada and Mexico are by far our most important trading partners, and we need to restore certainty in these critical relationships that support millions of American jobs.

Sincerely,
