Let's take a cue from the Pentagon and the private sector - enterprises that already account for the costs of carbon. The idea that we have to choose between economic growth and environmental sustainability is a false one and should be rejected. Barring agencies from including the social cost of carbon is not just a backward approach, but threatens our country's ability to create high-quality jobs and to ensure our nation's future security. Congress should embrace the use of the social cost of carbon as a way to increase informed policy making.

To get our economy back on track we should be figuring out more ways to help businesses as effectively as this Bank does instead of contemplating getting rid of an agency that creates jobs, grows businesses, contributes to deficit reduction, and supports our global competitiveness. It is imperative that Congress reauthorize the Export-Import Bank.

Since taking office in January 2013, I’ve toured over 100 companies, research labs, and universities and have heard directly from business leaders and their employees about what Congress can do to grow the economy and create jobs.

Our region has three main economic drivers: innovation and scientific research; the military, defense, and our veterans; and our world-renowned tourism industry. As we find ways to expand economic opportunities for the middle class and plan for a prosperous future, we must focus in on areas where San Diego is already leading the way and can set an example for the rest of the country.
