Dear friend,

As we move away from most COVID-19 related restrictions, it might be easy to forget how this event shaped our mental health. Feelings of loneliness, isolation and depression in both adults and children don't disappear with the end of pandemic regulations. Just like we take care of our physical health, our mental health is just as important. Since May is Mental Health Awareness Month, I encourage you to take care of yourself and seek help if you need it.

Below is another update on the work my staff and I have done recently to serve you.

This Week's Casework Success Story

Last month, Robert from Del Mar Heights contacted my office regarding his Social Security benefits. His benefits were delayed due to his move from New Jersey to San Diego. Since Robert had already notified the SSA office in New Jersey about his move, my staff contacted that office and inquired about this delay. After three weeks, Robert's benefits were updated and he received $2,700.

Engaging with San Diego's Regional Leaders

LEAD SD

Last week, I spoke to a group participating in LEAD San Diego’s Influence program. LEAD San Diego is a nonpartisan affiliate of the San Diego Regional Chamber that offers several programs to help leaders learn about key regional issues and establish strong community connections. I provided an update on my work in Congress and answered questions on the events of January 6th, housing and homelessness, and working across the aisle to find bipartisan solutions to our most pressing problems. It's always an honor to engage with this San Diego network that continues building up our region.

Honoring Local Teachers from the Hindu Community

Earlier this month ahead of Teacher Appreciation Week, I attended an event to honor teachers and school district staff from our local Hindu community. COVID-19 reminded us of the critical role teachers play in helping students grow and learn. It was great to show my appreciation in person and to learn the different ways in which school staff and teachers are supporting children while navigating the effects of the pandemic.

Meeting San Diego Unified School District's New Superintendent

SDUSD officials

I recently met with San Diego Unified School District's Superintendent, Lamont Jackson, and other district officials. We discussed Superintendent Lamont's new role since starting this past March and the current relationship between families and school boards. Other we discussed included federal assistance for students who are refugees, how federal COVID-19 assistance has helped SDUSD schools, the importance of IDEA funding for students with disabilities, and the continued need for impact aid to support military families.

Cannabis Research in San Diego

Also last week, I met with Dr. Igor Grant and Dr. Thomas Marcotte from the Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research at UC San Diego. During our meeting, they discussed the center's recent activities and studies including one on cannabis consumption and driving recently published in the JAMA Psychiatry medical journal. We also spoke about a bill my office is working on that would allow researchers to access regulated dispensary products to advance our knowledge on medicinal cannabis and public health. Thank you to Dr. Grant and Dr. Marcotte for your work and I will continue supporting the efforts of this center which remains a national leader in this field!
