Dear Friend,
A number of San Diegans have recently reported receiving scam phone calls involving "urgent messages" from individuals impersonating the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and Social Security Administration (SSA).
|
You should not give these callers any personal information, such as your Social Security Number, and you should hang up immediately. Never wire money or add money to a pre-paid debit card to pay for any official government service.
The SSA, SSA Office of the Inspector General, and IRS will generally NEVER contact the general public requesting personal information over the phone.
Government employees are not allowed to threaten you to obtain personal information or payments.
If you receive a suspicious phone call, please report your case online at https://oig.ssa.gov/report or https://identitytheft.gov/ssa, or by calling the Office of the Inspector General's fraud line at (800) 269-0271.
If you need help getting an answer from the SSA or IRS about your benefits, our office may be able to help. Learn more by visiting our website at https://scottpeters.house.gov/socialsecurity.
