Dear Friend,

Last week, we announced our bill, the Build More Housing Near Transit Act, at a press conference at the UTC Transit Center.

The Federal Transit Administration’s New Starts program funds transit projects like commuter rail, light rail, and bus rapid transit where project costs are at least $300 million or more. Our bill would require applicants to this competitive grant program to include housing feasibility assessments that determine how and where housing units could be built near new transit stops.

Build More Housing Near Transit Act.

Local Benefit

Improved planning to enrich our communities.

Right now, San Diego is determining how to maximize land-use at the Mid-Coast extension stops, but these discussions are happening years after San Diego received the first phase of federal funding.

The Build More Housing Near Transit Act would shift discussion of land use policy to earlier in the planning process.

MidCoast Tour

Rep. Peters visits the construction site for the Mid-Coast Trolley, which was partially funded through the New Starts program.

Environmental Benefits

Curbing vehicle emissions.

Increasing density means communities are less car dependent and can use public transit, which can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Our bill would mean a federal investment in transit has the potential to address our housing shortage, to mitigate our urgent climate crisis, and improve quality of life for our communities.

Sincerely,
