Dear Friend,
Happy Hispanic Heritage Month. Every year, from September 15th to October 15th, we come together to honor the accomplishments of Hispanic and Latino Americans, who enrich communities across the nation.

San Diego has a deep-seated history with Spain and Mexico from the discovery of our city in 1542, to the success of our agricultural centers, to the numerous art installations and well-loved restaurants that enrich our communities. None of these achievements would have been possible if not for immigrants who came to build their lives in the United States in search of the American Dream.
It’s important that in these divisive times, we push back against hateful rhetoric toward immigrants. In San Diego, we know immigrants make our nation stronger.

Earlier this year, I announced a bill to rename the Poway Post Office on Midland Road after a local Poway resident and World War II veteran, Raymond Barron Chavez. Born the son of Mexican immigrants, Ray moved to San Diego for elementary school.
He joined the U.S. Navy in 1938, where he was assigned to the USS Condor during World War II, and died as the oldest surviving veteran of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Ray exemplifies how Hispanic Americans embody community service and a love for our country.
