Congressman Peters’ Statement on Veterans’ Day

WASHINGTON, D.C. – This evening, U.S. Congressman Scott Peters (CA-52) released the following statement in advance of tomorrow’s observance of Veterans’ Day:

“Veterans’ Day is a time to honor and commemorate the sacrifices of our men and women in uniform, and their families, who have fought and died for our rights and freedoms. San Diego is a proud military community that embraces its heritage and role in our nation’s security. But we cannot allow servicemembers to fall through the cracks once they transition back to civilian life. We have a sacred responsibility to serve and care for them as they did for our country.

“I am extremely proud of the work that has been done in Congress to begin reforming a fundamentally broken system at the Department of Veterans Affairs, and locally to start the Military Transition Support Project that will provide a collaborative approach to easing the transition out of service for our veterans.

“As we take time on Veterans’ Day to reflect we must also renew our commitment to ending the all-too-prevalent scourge of suicide from the military and veterans’ communities and continue to make progress toward ending the chronic homelessness too many veterans face.”
